The 42-year anniversary of its illegal declaration gave Recep Tayyip Erdogan an opportunity to challenge again. This time he chose his social media account.

“Sincere congratulations on the 42nd anniversary of the declaration of the TRNC, I send my greetings and warm wishes to our Turkish Cypriot brothers and sisters on this special day,” wrote , in his post on X.

He then described Cyprus as a national issue. “I remember with mercy our heroic martyrs and honor our veterans with gratitude. We will never abandon our national cause of Cyprus and we will continue to strengthen our solidarity with the Turkish Cypriot people in every field,” he emphasized.

The position of the Greek Foreign Minister

“Greece is never going to accept the facts of the Turkish invasion and occupation and calls on all states to comply with International Law,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on the occasion of the completion of 42 years since the illegal declaration of the pseudo-state in Cyprus.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls on all states “to resist any form of revisionism and to absolutely respect the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus, vis-à-vis this separatist entity”.

“Today marks 42 years since the illegal, invalid and condemned by Resolutions 541/1983 and 550/1984 of the United Nations Security Council, unilateral declaration of the pseudo-state in complete violation of the fundamental principles of the Charter of the United Nations and International Law” points out the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He also emphasizes that “in solidarity with the Republic of Cyprus, we remain committed to the goal of finding a comprehensive, mutually acceptable solution, on the basis of the Bizonal, Bicommunal Federation, with political equality, with one international personality, one sovereignty and one citizenship, in the context defined by the Resolutions of the UN Security Council” and concludes:

“The recent diplomatic mobility in the Cyprus Issue, the appointment of a personal envoy of the UN Secretary General for the Cyprus issue, the informal meetings in an expanded format are important steps to create those conditions that will lead to the resumption of talks.”
