Chile is preparing for an important presidential election next Sunday (16), marked by the first implementation of mandatory voting in the country and with public security as voters’ main concern. The left-wing candidate, Jeannette Jara, leads the elections, however the projected scenarios indicate difficulties for a victory in the second round.
In an interview with the program Now CNNVoda’s political consultant, Celso Lamounier, explains that research shows that the right has an advantage in all scenarios if it contests the second round, whether with José Antonio Kast, Johannes Kaiser or Evelyn Matthei. “The expectation is that candidate Jara will be in the second round. The doubt is about the second place, as there is a dispute between right-wing candidates.”

The consultant also highlights the issue of electoral polls in Chile. “Polls here cannot be released in the two weeks leading up to the election.” This way, the scenario becomes nebulous.
Challenges of the Next Government
A , reflecting a widespread concern among the Chilean population. “In his own campaign, Jara started to talk more about the topic, something that was not among his main agenda”, says Lamounier.
The new government will also have to deal with the consequences of two frustrated attempts at constitutional reform and seek solutions for problems, which are currently in decline.
