Flamengo takes advantage of expulsions, thrashes Sport and puts pressure on Palmeiras

In a delayed game for the 12th round of the Brasileirão, Flamengo beat Sport 5-1 this Saturday (15), at Arena Pernambuco, and provisionally rose to first place in the tournament.

Luiz Araújo, Juninho, Bruno Henrique, Ayrton Lucas and Douglas Telles found the net in Mengão’s rout, while he scored for the home team. The Rio team took advantage of this to build their 21st victory in the competition.

Now, Flamengo has reached the mark of 71 points and taken the lead. The team overtook Palmeiras, who have 68 and will play this Saturday (15th), at 9pm (Brasília time), against Santos, in Vila Belmiro.

To departure

Sport took the lead after just 14 minutes, with striker Pablo. The home team recovered the ball in the attacking field and full-back Luan Cândido rolled the ball to the 33-year-old player, who finished in the corner and opened the scoring at Arena Pernambuco.

After the goal conceded, Flamengo went on the attack in search of a draw. The scenario became more favorable in the 35th minute, when Leão’s full-back Matheus Alexandre received a second yellow card for a foul on Ayrton Lucas and was expelled from the match.

Shortly afterwards, at 40, the Cariocas equalized the dispute with winger Luiz Araújo. He received Saúl from the midfielder, took a risk from outside the area and left everything the same in the confrontation.

Before the break, Sport had another player sent off. Defender Ramon Menezes hit striker Wallace Yan, received a second yellow card and left the home team with two players less.

With a numerical advantage on the field, Mengão quickly reached the turning point. In the 15th minute, center forward Juninho scored the second, taking advantage of the rebound of Everton Cebolinha’s shot.

In the next move, Bruno Henrique took advantage of goalkeeper Gabriel Vasconcelos’ mistake and covered up the opposing archer to make it 3-1.

The triumph turned into a rout at the feet of Ayrton Lucas, who relied on a defensive deflection to put the ball in the net. Finally, Cebolinha crossed just enough for young Douglas Telles, a professional debutant, to close the score at 5-1.
