French far-right wants to block EU budget to prevent agreement with Mercosur

Bardella accuses the European bloc of sacrificing French agriculture. Macron says that, in its current state, the agreement will receive “a round no from France”

The French extreme right wants the Government to suspend its contribution to the European Union budget, in order to prevent the agreement with Mercosur from coming into force.

Given the urgent situation that “agriculture faces, France should use its place in the Council [Europeu] and threaten to suspend its contribution to the European Union budget if the implementation of the agreement [Mercosul] continue”, said the president of the National Meeting, Jordan Bardella, in an interview with France 3.

For Bardella, the European Union is sacrificing French agriculture because the countries with which the agreement is signed do not respect the production standards that European producers must meet.

Last week, during his visit to Brazil, the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, was “quite optimistic” about the possibility of approving the agreement, although he stressed that France will remain “vigilant”.

However, this Wednesday he stated that, in its current state, the agreement will receive “a round no from France”.

The agreement between the EU and Mercosur, which aims to facilitate trade between the two blocs, has been under negotiation for two decades.

The EU hopes, with this agreement, to accelerate exports of products such as cars, machinery and alcoholic beverages to Mercosur countries – Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay.

In turn, this bloc will be able to make agri-food products such as beef, chicken, sugar, rice and soybeans reach Europe more easily.
