Iran says US not ready for ‘fair’ nuclear talks

Washington’s current approach towards Tehran does not indicate any willingness for “equal and fair negotiations”, Iran’s foreign minister said on Sunday (16), after US President Donald Trump last week hinted at possible discussions.

After the in June, which was accompanied by US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, attempts to renew dialogue on Tehran’s nuclear program failed.

The United States, its European allies and Israel accuse Tehran of using its nuclear program as a veil for efforts to develop weapons capacity. Iran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.

Tehran and Washington went through five rounds of indirect nuclear talks before the 12-day war, but faced obstacles such as the issue of domestic uranium enrichment, which the US wants Iran to abandon.

“People cannot hope to win what they could not in war through negotiations,” said Abbas Araqchi during a conference in Tehran called “International Law Under Attack.”

“Iran will always be prepared to engage in diplomacy, but not in negotiations designed to dictate,” he added.

During the same conference, Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh accused Washington of pursuing its war aims with “negotiations as a spectacle.”
