For several years, the name Mia has been dominating the maternity wardswhich is not losing popularity, on the contrary – more and more girls are getting them. It undoubtedly wins the hearts of parents, but we cannot say the same about linguists. According to experts, the problem lies mainly in pronunciation.

Currently, there is a trend not only for traditional, old Polish names, but also for those that are short, sonorous and sound similar in many languages. That’s what Mia is like which is a great choice for parents looking for a simple name that does not require diminutive words and has a unique sound (applies to people familiar with foreign languages).

The meaning of the name Mia is also delightful. Some sources say that it is a Danish or Swedish diminutive of the name Maria, which means “beloved”. Still others trace its origin to Italian. Then we translate it as “mine”.

Let’s focus on its popularity in Poland. According to data from the PESEL register, as many as 1,181 girls received this name in 2024. In turn, in the first half of 2025, they were broadcast 455 times.

Even though it is not in the top 10 most popular female names, because it was overtaken by Anna (given 1,310 times) or Aleksandra (given 1,522 times), it is still high in the ranking, as evidenced by the above data.
