For the first time since 2018, fewer teachers are retiring. By the end of the year, 3,675 teachers will retire, 275 fewer than last year.
3,625 educators and teachers will retire by the end of the year. There are 275 fewer than in 2024 and it is the first time since 2018 that this number has decreased.
The “Plan+ Classes,+ Success”, approved last year, proposes a monthly reward of up to 750 euros for teachers who agree to postpone their retirement.
The supplement may have contributed to this decrease, but it was not the only factor.
“It is a residual number, we understand that the main reason for the extension of the reform was the recovery of service time, (…) many teachers, in order to actually see this recovery, had to prolong it”, argues Cristina Mota, from Missão Escola Pública, maintaining that the “extra hours” are indeed having an impact, but “we believe that in the future it could have implications for wear and tear and the number of medical leaves”.
On the other hand, and despite these numbers, . Lisbon, Setúbal and Faro are the regions where schools have the most difficulty hiring.
In the first cycle, only teachers who have professional qualifications can teach. For the remaining levels of education, schools accept graduates with training in the area for which they are available to teach.
Still, there are vacancies to be filled.
