"Out with Claudia!" Thousands demonstrate in Mexico against "impunity" and violence

President Sheinbaum, who enjoys high popularity despite waves of violence, associates Gen Z Mexico protesters with the opposition

Thousands of people from Generation Z demonstrated on Saturday in Mexico City, shouting “Out with Claudia (Sheinbaum)!”, to express their displeasure with the Government of the Mexican President and denounce the “impunity” in the face of the violence that is ravaging the country.

The protesters walked, among One Piece flags, through central areas of the city and concentrated in the Zócalo (the name by which Constitution Square is known), in front of the National Palace, the seat of government, surrounded by fences that were torn down by hooded men identified as the “black block”.

The protest served as a catalyst for students, farmers, members of opposition political parties and other citizens to denounce that violence is out of control in many regions of the country.

Another dissatisfaction expressed by protesters was the increase in taxes on sugary drinks and video games, but above all the increase in prices for basic products such as food.

The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, continues to enjoy high popularity ratings, despite a recent wave of homicides, including that of a popular mayor in the western state of Michoacán.

In the days leading up to today’s protest, Sheinbaum accused right-wing parties of trying to infiltrate the Generation Z movement and using ‘bots’ (computer programs that perform automatic tasks on social media, such as commenting or reacting) to try to increase participation.

This year, in several countries, people born between the late 1990s and early 2010s organized protests against inequality, democratic backsliding and corruption.

Sheinbaum links the self-described Generation Z Mexico group as part of the political opposition to his government and the Movimento Regeneración Nacional (Morena), the party in power.
