They fled from violence, but death found them in the mine. A landslide in Congo has killed more than 100 people

The tragedy happened on Friday afternoon at a gold mine near the town of Kolwezi in Lualaba province.

More than a hundred people died after a landslide at a gold mine in southern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Friday, local police said on Sunday. TASR informs about it according to the report of the DPA agency.

The tragedy happened on Friday afternoon at a gold mine near the town of Kolwezi in Lualaba province. Initial reports counted at most 70 dead, but the number of bodies recovered by Saturday morning had already reached 101. Rescue efforts are still ongoing and the authorities assume that even more victims remain underground.

Causes of the incident

According to a local refugee aid organization, some of the victims were internally displaced persons. The DPA agency reports that due to the unstable security situation in the DRC, many people migrate to the south of the country, where they subsequently find work in unregulated mines.

Landslides are common in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, especially during periods of heavy rain. In June of this year, more than 200 people died in a similar accident in the east of the country.
