The election, which also renewed the Chamber of Deputies and part of the Senate, took place under mandatory voting and automatic registration
This Sunday (16) the voting centers closed and began counting the votes in a presidential election polarized between the former communist minister Jeannette Jara, 51, and the radical right candidate José Antonio Kast, 59. The election, which also renewed the and part of the Senate, took place under mandatory voting and automatic registration, increasing the electorate to 15.7 million people.
Other names in the running included former center-right minister Evelyn Matthei, 72, and libertarian deputy Johannes Kaiser, 49, as well as four candidates with lower voting intentions, in a scenario marked by debates on immigration, organized crime and a stagnant economy.
Research indicated that none of the candidates would reach the 50% required to win in the first round, which should take the dispute to the second stage, scheduled for December 14th.
The counting began in the early evening and the first official results are expected this Sunday.
