Temperatures are dropping outside, and we can rest easy knowing that with the onset of the colder season, all sorts of pesky pests are also leaving for their temporary eternal hunting grounds. The ones outside probably do, but the mites that have taken up residence in our bedroom have quite a different opinion.
As outdoor temperatures drop, attention shifts to indoor pests, especially bedroom mites. As we well know, it is precisely the bed that is the “promised land” for mites. While we sleep at night, we sweat and the movement of our bodies across the sheet peels off the old skin flakes, the mites warm up and feast, without exaggeration, on our bodies. It is not surprising that their presence can disrupt the quality of sleep without us realizing the reason for our dissatisfaction. Allergy sufferers are in an even worse situation, because dust mites are the most common trigger of asthma in the apparent safety of home.
Where can we find mites? Watch the video:
Heat and humidity are ideal for mites
But why do potential problems intensify in winter? It is not as complicated as it seems at first glance. On cold days, we spend more time at home, including in the bedroom. We heat and if we don’t ventilate a lot, the humidity in the apartment also increases. That’s how we unconsciously create ourselves an absolutely ideal environment for the reproduction of mites: the optimum temperature for them is 20-25 °C and humidity between 70 and 80%. The mattress soon becomes a reservoir these small predators.
It’s not just the mites themselves
We should also know that while spending the night together with mites is definitely not a pleasant idea, much bigger problems than themselves are theirsfeces. They contain proteins that cause itching all over the body. During cleaning, they get into the air, are then inhaled and act in the body. If a person is exposed to such an environment for a long time, severe conditions can develop. For this reason it is the fight against mites in the bedroom is a definite priority.
Protect the bed and yourself
How about these creatures that are practically invisible to the naked eye? The fight against them must be complex and persistent. The first and most important step is protection of mattresses and pillows using special, allergen-impermeable coatings. Furthermore, it is necessary regular washing of bedding in warm water minimum 55 °Cbetter in an even warmer one, in order to reliably kill mites and eliminate allergens.
Proper vacuum cleaner and ventilation
As soon as you pick up the vacuum cleaner, make sure that it has a so-called , which is able to capture micro-particles of allergens instead of releasing them back into the room. In addition, we also mentioned humidity, which is one of the basic points of mite happiness. But as soon as we manage it reduce below 50% – for example, by regular ventilation or using dehumidifiers – the number of mites will drop significantly.
Do you really need carpets?
For an even better bedroom environment, think carefully about do you really need a “dust collector” here?such as heavy carpets, fabric curtains, unnecessary bedspreads and blankets that you never actually use. Although all these accessories can underline the warm atmosphere of the room, we will certainly be happy to exchange them for healthier environment– for example, in the Nordic simple style.
Eliminate as many as possible
Although even careful observance of all these and other similar tips cannot completely prevent dust mites from settling in your bedroom, we can at least count on the fact that their population will be much less numerous. In this case, we can already consider it a great success.
