Hasina, 78, has always denied the allegations and was tried in absentia. She fled by helicopter to India in August 2024. Judges found the former prime minister guilty of several charges related to crimes against humanity, in particular for inciting and ordering murders, according to the verdict.
After the sentence, Hasina, who was the country’s head of government for 15 years, stated that the verdict was “politically motivated”. “The sentences handed down against me were dictated by a manipulated court, established and presided over by an unelected government with no democratic mandate,” he declared in a statement.
The Dacca court’s decision was highly anticipated in the country of more than 170 million inhabitants, which is preparing for the next legislative elections in three months. The capital’s police were mobilized to guarantee security around the court and in all strategic points of the city.
