Former Bangladesh Prime Minister sentenced to death penalty

Sheikh Hasina has been in exile in India since August last year.

Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, was sentenced to the death penalty this Monday for her actions during an anti-government demonstration in 2024. Hasina is accused of several crimes against humanity.

The popular revolt, also known as “July Revolution”took place between July and August 2024 and was triggered by student protests against discriminatory employment quotas. The movement intensified following reports of harsh government repression.

According to the UN, at least 1,400 protesters died in the clashes with security forces.

Trial without the presence of Sheikh Hasina

This Monday’s trial took place without the presence of the former minister.
