Top interior designers are slowly moving away from strict minimalism or the ubiquitous gray. Currently, it is an increasingly popular solution in houses and apartments which was a big hit during the Polish People’s Republic.
It’s all about geometric, bold stripes. These characteristic lines, formerly synonymous with simple but dynamic design, are returning at the turn of 2025 and 2026. They are on top again, but in a refreshed version as a complement to the characterful ones.
Stripes are a pattern that can evoke memories of people raised there in the 1970s and 1980s at the end of the Polish People’s Republic. They were extremely fashionable at that time, especially in a vertical form, because they optically increased the height of not very high apartments in prefabricated blocks.
At that time, stripes reigned supreme, along with checks and small regular patterns. Nowadays, interior designers are more and more willing to be inspired by the past, modernizing retro-style finishes. This is a simple trick to lengthen the walls (vertical stripes) or widen the room (horizontal stripes). and add character to the rooms.
Nowadays, striped wallpapers work best in combination with natural materials, such as light wood or vintage accessories.which further emphasize the reference to the past.
If you are afraid that the effect will be too “granny”, wallpaper or paint only part of one wall and choose modern furniture, e.g. in an industrial style. Don’t be afraid of, for example, strong mustard or fashionable shades of blue.
If you like to stand out, choose combinations of navy blue with white or green with classic black. You don’t want to change the decor drastically? Don’t change the walls, just add striped accessories, e.g. bedspreads or curtains.
