Lula supports South Africa amid Trump boycott – 11/17/2025 – Brasília Hoje

The president (PT) expressed support for , in the context of actions against inequality, in a phone call made this Monday (17) to the country’s president, Cyril Ramaphosa. South Africa hosts the G20 summit on November 22nd and 23rd.

In the call, which lasted around 40 minutes, Lula reiterated Brazil’s support for South Africa’s initiatives within the G20, in particular the work of the Group of Experts on Inequality.

South Africa began to preside over the countries’ summit in December 2024, succeeding Brazil. In this Monday’s call, the two leaders talked about the priorities for managing the group going forward.

Lula highlighted in the conversation with Ramaphosa that Brazil also supports the creation of an International Panel on Inequality, similar to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Trump has been making attacks against South African leaders due to the approval of the land expropriation law, which he calls “racist against whites”, and the South African government’s position in relation to the military actions of Israel, Washington’s historic ally, in .

This Monday morning, Lula dedicated part of his time at Palácio do Planalto to discuss the partnership with the African continent and carry out exchanges with other Portuguese-speaking countries.

On this trip to the African continent, Lula will also pass through Mozambique.

At the ceremony, the PT member said he intended to create an agreement between Brazilian universities and federal institutes and Embrapa (Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation) to share agricultural technical knowledge for the African people. According to him, the idea is to make African countries develop the “agricultural revolution” that is already taking place in Brazil.
