President of Ecuador loses referendum for new Constitution and foreign military bases

The “no” won with an advantage of between 23 and 6 percentage points

The President of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, was defeated in a referendum, held on his initiative, with four issues widely rejected by the population, including constitutional reform and the installation of foreign military bases in the country.

The referendum proposals, which also proposed the establishment of a new Constituent Assembly with less than half of the current deputies – 73 instead of 151 – and withdrawing public funding from political parties, were widely rejected by Ecuadorians on Sunday.

The “no” won with an advantage of between 23 and 6 percentage points, according to the results of more than 85% of the published vote count.

With these numbers, the president of the Ecuadorian National Electoral Council, Diana Atamaint, pointed out that in the four questions the “no” has a marked trend, despite the fact that the counting of votes has not been completed and approximately 20% of the minutes remain to be processed, the majority with observations.
