Extensive damage was caused by persistent rains that hit the Italian regions of Liguria, Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna on Sunday. The APA agency informed about it. In the metropolis of Liguria A retaining wall collapsed in the Pegli district of Genoa, damaging several cars and gas and electricity supplies had to be cut off in the area.
In Genoa, water flooded many streets, which in some places resembled streams. A tree fell near the Sant’Anna funicular. Firefighters had to evacuate passengers from the blocked cabin; no one was injured. The cable car was temporarily shut down.
City officials urged residents not to travel unnecessarily and to avoid dangerous areas such as subways, bridges and riverbanks. City parks, gardens and cemeteries were temporarily closed.
The rains also caused significant problems in the north of Tuscany, specifically in the province of Lucca, where landslides occurred. Emergency services remained on alert due to the expected further rainfall. The Italian Civil Protection expects a further worsening of weather conditions in northern Italy and Tuscany in the coming hours.
