The Louvre is closing the gallery as a precaution. The director warns about the condition of the museum premises

The Louvre in Paris closed the Campani Gallery due to construction defects in the beams. This popular part of the museum is known for its exhibition of Greek ceramics.

Paris’ Louvre museum announced on Monday that it will close the Campani Gallery as a precaution due to construction flaws in some of the building’s beams. TASR took over the report from the AFP agency.

  • Paris’s Louvre Museum has closed Campani’s gallery over concerns.

The Campani Gallery will remain closed until “specific deficiencies in some of the beams supporting the second-floor floors” above the gallery are investigated, the museum said.

Transfers of employees

It added that it currently houses office space and that all 65 people who normally work there have been relocated.

AFP explains that nine rooms in Campani’s gallery are dedicated to ceramics from the Ancient Greek period. The announcement of the closing of the gallery is not related to the burglary on October 19, when four criminals stole jewelry with an estimated value of 88 million euros within seven minutes. However, this is another bad news for the institution, which faces criticism for insufficient security measures, the agency adds.

Construction problems

The director of the Louvre, Laurence des Cars, warned back in January of “the spread of damage in the museum premises, some of which are in a very bad state”. According to her, several spaces “are no longer waterproof, while others are exposed to significant temperature fluctuations, which threatens the preservation of works of art”, reminds AFP.
