Brazil receives 1st batch of insulin glargine for type 2 diabetes

Ministry of Health receives shipment with 2 million units of the medicine that will be produced nationally by Fiocruz in Ceará

The Minister of Health, Alexandre Padilha, was on Monday (17.Nov.2025) in Guarulhos (SP) to receive the 1st batch with more than 2 million units of insulin glargine, which serves people with type 2 diabetes.

“Today is a great day for SUS [Sistema Único de Saúde]a great day for health sovereignty in Brazil and a great day for the safety of patients who have type 2 diabetes”, said the minister at a press conference at Guarulhos Airport.

Already offered to those with type 1 of the disease, the product was acquired through PDP (Partnership for Productive Development) and there will be technology transfer to the public laboratory Bio-Manguinhos (Fiocruz).

Thus, the medicine will be produced in the country, which will make Brazil no longer dependent on the foreign market.

“It’s a safety measure, because it prevents this patient from being subjected to international insulin crises, as there are today,” stated the minister.

For Padilha, treatment with insulin glargine is a major advance: “It is easier to use and the response is also better.”

The production of the medicine in Brazil will be carried out by Friocruz together with Biomm in a partnership with the Chinese company Gan&Lee, one of the world’s largest insulin producers.

“It is a partnership that takes place due to the strengthening of the SUS, the decision of the Ministry of Health together with states and municipalities to start offering insulin glargine also to those with type 2 diabetes”, said Padilha.

The expectation, according to the minister, is that with the transfer of technology to Fiocruz, production – in the state of Ceará – will reach somewhere around 30 to 40 million units per year.

“It’s a great partnership that brings guarantee and security to Brazilian patients.”

Currently, around 20 million people have diabetes in the country.

According to the minister, in addition to this shipment, Brazil will receive another 4.7 million units by the end of the year, reaching almost seven million. Thus, the federal government’s investment in combating diabetes, in 2025, will be R$131.8 million.
