The governor of Pará, Helder Barbalho, and the mayor of Belém, Igor Normando, responded this Monday (17) to the speech made by the Prime Minister of Germany, Friedrich Merz, about his visit to the capital of Pará.

He also commented on the fact from the perspective of climate change: “It’s curious to see those who helped warm the planet find the heat in the Amazon strange.”

Mayor Igor Nomando made similar criticisms. Also in X, Normando said that “Each person gives what they have, and, unfortunately, the German Chancellor exudes prejudice and arrogance in his speech”. He published his message also in English.
The two Brazilian politicians took advantage of the situation to praise the hospitality of the people of Pará. “We will continue to treat everyone who visits us with respect and joy, after all, it is the best we have,” said the mayor. “Pará opened its doors and showed the strength of a welcoming people,” wrote Barbalho.

A speech made by the German Chancellor last week was made public this Monday and aroused criticism from Brazilians.
In his speech, Merz says that Germany is one of the most beautiful countries in the world and makes a comparison with Brazil, stating that he asked the journalists who were part of his delegation in Belém if anyone would like to stay, but that everyone was happy to return to Germany.
Merz’s speech took place at the German Trade Congress and the prime minister was trying to convey the message of defending and valuing Germany from a commercial point of view.
