Albares estimates that Spain will contribute 1,000 million to Ukraine for the purchase of weapons
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, has reaffirmed Spain’s commitment to the sovereignty, freedom and territorial integrity of Ukraine and has announced that Spain will contribute 1,000 million euros to the purchase of military equipment from the United States for use in Ukraine, to which will be added spending on other types of equipment, such as generators to alleviate Russian attacks on the Ukrainian energy infrastructure before the arrival of winter.
“Spain maintains a long-term commitment to the sovereignty and defense of Ukraine and will maintain it as long as the war lasts,” Albares began in an interview on RNE. Asked about the magnitude of this commitment, the minister stated that last year Spain contributed 1 billion for Ukraine to acquire military equipment and that this year “something similar” is expected. Furthermore, he recalled that, beyond these amounts for weapons, Spain provides other types of aid, in addition to hosting 250,000 Ukrainian refugees, including 40,000 children, and supporting both kyiv’s entry into the EU and the creation of a special court to try those Russians responsible for the crime of aggression.
The minister has trusted that Sumar, a partner of the PSOE in the coalition government and traditionally reluctant to spend on weapons, will not oppose this military aid to kyiv. “The entire Government is united for peace in Ukraine and in Europe, the entire Government is aware that many things are at stake in Ukraine: its sovereignty and its freedom, but also human rights, international law and international humanitarian law.”
