Lula inaugurates bridge between Tocantins and Pará

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will go to the municipality of Xambioá, in Tocantins, this Tuesday, to inaugurate a 2,010-meter bridge over the Araguaia River, which will connect the state to São Geraldo do Araguaia, in Pará. In total, the federal government invested R$232.3 million in the project and works.

The bridge structure had been ready since the beginning of this year, but the access points on both sides were missing, which only began to be built by the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT) last month. Only the access work received federal investments of R$28.8 million under the New PAC.

Lula’s visit is the second to Tocantins since the beginning of his term. The president was in the state on June 27, when he visited Araguatins, on the banks of the Araguaia River, in a ceremony to hand over land regularization titles. At the time, Tocantins was the last of the Brazilian states to be visited by the president during this term.

The bridge, which Lula is expected to inaugurate together with the Minister of Transport, Renan Filho, will replace a crossing that is currently made by ferries on trips that cost up to R$300 each way.

The structure should be used by trucks traveling along BR-153, also known as Transbrasiliana, an important route for transporting agricultural and industrial production in the North and Central-West regions.

In total, BR-153 is around 3,200 kilometers long and passes through eight states, from Marabá (PA) to Aceguá (RS), in the extreme south of the country, bordering Uruguay.
