Lula sanctions law that prohibits neutral language in public administration

The president sanctioned a new law that prohibits the use of in public administration at all levels (federal, state and municipal).

The measure, published in the Official Gazette of the Union on Monday (18), is part of the National Simple Language Policy, created to facilitate the understanding of official information by citizens.

The Federal Government justifies the prohibition of neutral language as a measure to guarantee access to information. In the Executive’s view, the use of gender-bending language can make it difficult for the public to understand. “The objective is to ensure that anyone can find the information they need, understand what is being communicated and use this information to resolve their demand”, states the official text of the new policy.

“Do not use new forms of inflection of gender and number of words in the Portuguese language, contrary to the consolidated grammatical rules, the Spelling Vocabulary of the Portuguese Language (Volp) and the Spelling Agreement of promulgated by Decree No. 6,583, of September 29, 2008”, says an excerpt from the law.
