Roblox institutes age verification for chat access

Gaming platform is a hit among children; The objective is to limit communication between minors and adults

The platform will implement a facial age verification system for all users who wish to access chat features. To measure, this Tuesday (18.nov.2025), it will group people of similar age groups for conversations and limit interactions between minors and adults. The process will use Facial Age Estimation technology.

Verification will begin in December in select markets such as Australia, New Zealand and the Netherlands and will expand globally in January 2026. The goal is to create a safer environment and provide more age-appropriate experiences for all users.

To have access to chat, the user will go through the verification process using their device’s camera. The images will be processed by the platform provider, the company specialized in facial checking. According to Roblox, data is deleted immediately after processing.

The check will estimate the user’s age and set an age limit for interactions. For example, players aged 12 will only be able to communicate with people up to 15 years old.

The statement informs that chat in experiences – immersive 3D environments in which users play and interact – will be disabled by default for children under 9 years old, except when authorized by parents.

Chat outside of experiences will remain restricted to users under the age of 13, an age group that comprises around 39% of all players on the platform, according to a survey released in 2025.
