STF forms majority to convict nine more defendants for the coup plot

The majority of ministers of the First Panel of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) voted this Tuesday (18) for the conviction of nine defendants from Nucleus 3 of the coup plot that occurred during the government of former president Jair Bolsonaro.

The trial score is 3 votes to 0 for conviction. The rapporteur, minister Alexandre de Moraes, and ministers Cristiano Zanin and Cármen Lúcia voted in this sense.

The session continues to take the last vote, which will be given by Flávio Dino.

The ministers who have already voted also spoke out for the acquittal of Army General Estevam Theofhilo due to lack of evidence.

During today’s session, the panel will move on to the phase of reading the sentences of the convicted, the so-called dosimetry.

The one from the Army and a federal police officer. The accused are known as “black kids”, soldiers who were part of the Army’s special forces group. They are accused by the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) of planning tactical actions to carry out the coup plan and trying to kidnap and kill minister Alexandre de Moraes, the vice-president, Geraldo Alckmin, and president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The accused were convicted of the crimes of armed criminal organization, attempted violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, coup d’état, qualified damage through violence and serious threat and deterioration of listed property.

Except in the case of Márcio Nunes de Resende Júnior and Ronald Ferreira de Araújo Júnior. Their conduct was disqualified for the crimes of incitement to commit crime and criminal association. With the change, their sentences will be reduced.
