The myth of polarization – 11/18/2025 – Dora Kramer

Right and left, as they present themselves today, do not fall in favor with the majority. Neither does the so-called one. A walk through real life gives the dimension of what is happening far from the internet and the news that reverberates the engaged voices.

That’s what researchers Pablo Ortellado and Felipe Nunes did when they prepared a survey with two hundred questions for 10,000 Brazilians. The result translated reality into numbers: those who are extremely passionate are 11%, and those who are slightly in love, 35% — while 54% are on the dance floor, waiting for whoever piques their interest.

As demonstrated, we have that the noisy minority, although insignificant in electoral terms, ends up leading the election to such a dispute of rejections. This despite the fact that almost the entire electorate is open to choices different from those already offered.

And it is in the absence of people capable of embodying a new boss of conquest that things get stuck and keep the country trapped in a logic in which the choice of president is due more to the fear of making mistakes than the desire to get things right.

Hence the abstention rates, null and blank votes, given the lack of encouragement to the majority uninterested in entering into a war over pet idols, today symbolized in the figures of (PT) and (PL). Both worn out by time and other circumstances.

The existence of a vast electorate adrift comes up against the lack of candidates fluent in the language of demands for a State that protects the population, but does not hinder and offers decent public services, with rulers attentive to citizens, who do not see them as a mass of electoral maneuver and include them in the country’s development projects.

Campaign strategists know this. The problem is that the recipe is missing the main ingredient: quality raw materials. Just like silent voters, good candidates for election are certainly out there. In shrinking, without space or willingness to face the noise of the extremes.
