On Tuesday, the Palestinian Authority (PA) called for the immediate implementation of the resolution of the Security Council of the United Nations (UNSC). which supports US President Donald Trump’s peace plan for the Gaza Strip. In doing so, she opposed the Hamas movement, which criticizes the resolution adopted on Monday, TASR informs, according to a report by the DPA agency.
The PA emphasized in the statement that the implementation of the resolution is urgent necessary to protect the residents of the Palestinian enclave, prevent displacement, allow for the full withdrawal of Israeli forces, reconstruct the heavily devastated territory, and support a two-state solution.
Trump’s 20-point plan envisages the disarmament of Hamas, the deployment of the International Stabilization Force and the establishment of a peace council – a transitional governing body for the Gaza Strip. The Palestinian Authority has said it is ready to work with the US, the European Union, Muslim countries and UNSC members to implement the resolution in a way that alleviates the suffering of Palestinians. in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
According to the PA, the path to peace between Israelis and Palestinians must continue and be based on a two-state solutionwhile an independent Palestinian state would peacefully exist alongside Israel. The possibility of the future existence of a Palestinian state is also mentioned in the adopted resolution, which provoked criticism from Israel.
Hamas rejects the two-state solution and calls for the destruction of Israel and the declaration of an Islamic state in the historical territory of Palestine, writes DPA. The Israeli government also protests against the two-state solution and claims that a Palestinian state would threaten Israel’s existence. He criticizes the PA for allegedly supporting terrorism in the Gaza Strip.
By Monday’s vote, the UN Security Council basically expressed its approval for the transition to the second phase of the peace plan. In the first phase, which began with a ceasefire on October 10, Palestinian militant groups released 20 living Israeli hostages and handed over the bodies of almost all 28 dead captives. In exchange, Israel released nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners and withdrew from parts of the Gaza Strip.
The resolution, introduced by the United States, was approved by a vote of 13 to 0. Russia and China abstained. Trump welcomed the result of the vote and called it one of the “most important documents in the history of the United Nations”. US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz said the resolution “represents another significant step towards a stable Gaza that will be able to prosper and an environment that allows Israel to live in security.”
Russia’s ambassador to the UN Vasiliy Nebenzia said that Moscow noted this support but abstained from voting, because the resolution did not include the role of the Security Council or strongly support Palestinian statehood. At the same time, Russia presented an alternative resolution, and there were fears before the vote that it could use the right of veto. In the end it didn’t happen.
