University of Algarve launches SmartVITATUR project to modernize tourism in the region

The SmartVITATUR project, promoted by the University of Algarve, began its activity on November 14th at the Hotel Real Marina, in Olhão, with a session that brought together experts, researchers and institutional representatives to support the transition of the 16 Algarve municipalities into Smart Tourist Destinations (DTI).

Among the central purposes of SmartVITATUR, the adaptation of the Spanish model of Smart Tourist Destination to the reality of the Algarve stands out, with the aim of promoting more sustainable, innovative tourism oriented towards the well-being of local communities. The project aims to improve the quality of life of residents, strengthening the link between tourism, territory and social intelligence.

Algarve municipalities will benefit from an integrated diagnosis on quality of life and maturity in smart tourism, a personalized action plan to support the smart transformation of each destination, and strategic recommendations to guide public policies and local development initiatives.

The project also includes the creation of the SmartVITATUR Network, a continuous collaboration platform for the regular exchange of good practices in smart tourism, aimed at resolving the specific challenges faced by Algarve destinations. Reference Spanish destinations with consolidated experience in Smart Tourist Destinations will share methodologies, solutions and learning with municipalities in the region, promoting a process of mutual empowerment and joint evolution.

The kick-off session was attended by Manuela Guerreiro, coordinator of CinTurs, and Patrícia Pinto, researcher responsible for the project, who introduced the objectives of SmartVITATUR. The presentation of the Smart Tourist Destinations model in Spain was led by Ginesa Martínez del Vas, from the Universidad Católica de Murcia (UCAM), highlighting the advances and learning of the neighboring country.

Subsequently, researchers Patrícia Pinto and Miguel Puig detailed the methodological approach and scope of the project, emphasizing its contribution to supporting informed decisions and promoting tourism development that benefits visitors and residents.

The meeting culminated in a debate involving representatives from Algarve municipalities and the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA), highlighting the collective commitment to transforming the region into a more intelligent, inclusive and sustainable territory.

SmartVITATUR is a project co-financed by the ALGARVE 2030 Program through FEDER (ALGARVE-FEDER-00738500 / SmartVITATUR – 16227) and by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).
