Israeli airstrikes on Gaza leave 22 dead. The army says it targeted Hamas after violating a fragile ceasefire.
The Israeli army announced that it carried out airstrikes on targets of the militant Hamas movement throughout the Palestinian territory of the Gaza Strip on Wednesday. The Civil Protection Agency in Gaza reported that 22 people were killed in airstrikes, TASR reports, according to an AFP report.
The spokesman of the office clarified that the number of victims in the area of Gaza City in the north of the strip increased from 11 to 12. Another ten people lost their lives in attacks in the south around the city of Khan Yunis.
The Israeli military says it targeted Hamas after the militants opened fire in the south, where soldiers were stationed. “This move constitutes a violation of the ceasefire agreement. No IDF (Israeli Army) injuries were reported. In response, the IDF began attacking Hamas terrorist targets across the Gaza Strip,” the military said in a statement.
Despite occasional conflicts, a fragile cease-fire has been in effect in Gaza since October 10, based on an agreement brokered by the US. The war was sparked by a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, in which the militants killed 1,221 people. According to the Hamas-run Ministry of Health, Israeli retaliatory strikes claimed at least 69,513 lives.
