Friedrich Merz, Chancellor of Germany
The chancellor’s statements at COP30 became controversial. Nobody wanted to stay in Brazil – or did everyone want to return to Germany?
The climate summit COP30 in Belém, Brazil, there had already been a hotter moment, when protesters invaded.
But now another controversial moment arises, involving the Chancellor of Germany. Not exactly at the summit, but related to the event.
When I was already in Berlin, Friedrich Merz that the journalists traveling alongside him were “happy” to leave Brazil for Germany.
Merz revealed that none of his delegation wanted to stay longer in the Brazilian city; this in a context of praise for Germany.
“Ladies and gentlemen, we live in one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Last week, I asked some of the journalists who were with me at the Brazil: which of you would like to stay here? None of them raised their hands. Everyone was happy that we returned to Germany on Friday night”, shared the German Chancellor, quoted in .
Lula da Silva knew and didn’t like it. And he left a hint: “He, in fact, I should have gone to a bar in Paráyou should have danced in Pará, you should have tried the food in Pará, because you would realize that Berlin does not offer you 10% of the quality that the state of Pará and the city of Belém offer”, said the president of Brazil.
Igor Normando, president of Belém City Council, said that the words of the leader of the German Government were “unhappy, arrogant and prejudiced”.
However, it remained unclear whether Merz meant that the delegation was happy to have left Brazil – or that they were happy to return to Germanyregardless of country of origin.
