The deadline for paying the last installment of Municipal Property Tax (IMI) ends within a few days. Taxpayers who have properties registered in their name have until December 2nd to fulfill their tax obligation for the previous year.
Deadline enters the final stretch
According to Notícias ao Minuto, the Tax Authority (AT) recalls that this phase applies to the second installment of tax for amounts between 100 and 500 euros and the third installment for amounts greater than 500 euros. The indication was shared by AT through a post on the social network Instagram, highlighting that it was the last payment window of the year.
All people who own properties registered until December 31st of the previous year must pay IMI. According to the same source, the letter with the amount to be paid and the necessary references will be sent by April 30, either by post or through the electronic notification system.
How payments work throughout the year
The number of installments depends on the total amount calculated for the taxpayer. Amounts equal to or less than 100 euros are settled in a single installment, on May 31st. Between 100 and 500 euros, payment is divided into two phases, with due dates on May 31st and September 30th. Above this limit, the tax is divided into three installments: May 31st, August 31st and November 30th.
Despite this, there is the possibility of paying off the full amount in one go. The letter sent in May includes references for this full payment.
Next year, the May installment may be paid until June 30th, under an order from the Secretary of State for Fiscal Affairs, exceptionally extending the usual deadline.
Consequences of non-compliance
Anyone who misses the deadline may be subject to late payment interest or fines provided for in article 116 of the General Regime of Tax Offenses. If the letter sent by Finance has been lost, it is possible to consult the data again on the Finance Portal.
The process is simple: the taxpayer must authenticate, access the All Services menu, search for the Municipal Property Tax area and choose the billing note corresponding to the year due.
From there, you have the amount, deadline and references for payment, which can be made through homebanking, ATM, MB WAY or direct debit.
According to , the essential thing during this period is to ensure that the deadline does not go unnoticed. The closing date is close and AT does not foresee any new extensions for this payment cycle.
