The STJD (Superior Court of Sports Justice) suspended referee Ramon Abatti Abel and VAR Ilbert Estevam for 40 days for errors made by the duo in the match between São Paulo and Palmeiras, in the 27th round of the Brazilian Championship, at the beginning of October.
The two were framed under Article 259 of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice, for “failing to observe the rules of the sport”.
They were punished with a 20-day suspension for not awarding a penalty to midfielder Allan, from Palmeiras, over Chilean striker Gonzalo Tapia, from São Paulo. And they received another 20 days of punishment for not expulsion of Andreas Pereira and Gustavo Gómez, from Abel Ferreira’s team.
The unmarked penalty took place nine minutes into the second half, when the game was still 2-0 for São Paulo. Midfielder Allan slipped on the field and brought down striker Tapia inside the area.
Abatti Abel understood that it was a normal shock and ordered the game to continue, without VAR Ilbert Estevam calling him for an image check.
Shortly after this move, Andreas Pereira committed a very harsh foul on Marcos Antônio, hitting the opponent with the sole of his boot just above the ankle line.
In this case, the referee pointed out that the Palmeiras athlete rolled his foot over the ball before the collision, which made the application of just a yellow card correct.
The game, which also included an elbow from Gustavo Gómez on Tapia, ended with a 3-2 victory for Palmeiras, at Morumbi.
The decisions are made by the second disciplinary commission of the STJD and are still subject to appeal to the full court.
The refereeing duo had already been removed by the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation) to undergo training before returning to officiating Brazilian Championship matches.
