PT talks about a ‘thankless fight’ and damage to the security narrative
The president’s assistants and members of the government base told the Young Pan that the bench did not consider voting in favor of Guilherme Derrite’s report, to avoid wear and tear. However, President Lula himself asked for a vote against the opinion, making the attempt to minimize the defeat unfeasible.
The first strategy of the government bench and during the vote this Tuesday (18), was to try to approve a request to return to the original text of the Ministry of Justice. After the proposal was rejected, the government leaders considered that it would be better to support Derrite’s text, but the order for the opposite direction came from Lula.
Members of Palácio do Planalto and the PT leadership are now beginning to calculate the losses that the government will incur with this position. One of the president’s allies said that, especially on social media, the “fight will be thankless” and that the government must “lose badly” the security narrative. Even so, the PT members will invest in the speech that the Chamber voted to protect the “most powerful”, betting again on the erosion of the Centrão.
Government supporters have said that the approved text weakens the Federal Police. However, the rapporteur redirected resources from operations to the National Public Security Fund, to which the Federal Police has access. A government complaint was that the first opinion only provided for the allocation of funds to state police.
Another government strategy will be to bet on modifications to the proposal that can be made in the Senate. However, any change would take the text back to the Chamber of Deputies.
