A new risk of a major landslide threatens the Swiss village of Brienz

The village of Brienz, located in the canton of Graubünden in eastern Switzerland, is facing a major new landslide threat that could affect several households.

The information was confirmed by local authorities and reported by SwissInfo, cited by “European Pravda”.

The administration of the municipality of Albula, to which Brienz belongs, warns that in the next few days there could be a massive landslide from the nearby mountain massif.

The monitoring shows an acceleration of the movement of the plateau located above the town. The speed of soil movement reached 8-10 centimeters per day, the highest recorded so far.

Geological experts consider it very likely that a mass of about 150,000 cubic meters of rock will collapse in a short time. In the worst case scenario, the volume could reach up to one million cubic meters, which could affect some households in the village. However, there is also a favorable scenario, in which the detachment would not reach the inhabited areas.

The authorities specify that the railway line and the road passing under the town are not in danger.

Evacuated residents are not allowed to return to their homes, as landslides can occur at any time. Initially, it was planned that access to the village would be allowed on Wednesdays and weekends between 9:00 and 17:00, but the measure was canceled for safety reasons.
