Santos’ situation against relegation
Currently, Santos is in 16th place in the Brazilian Championship, with 36 points, one more than Vitória, the first team within the Z4. Furthermore, Peixe has one more victory, which is the first tiebreaker criterion for the Brasileirão.
Santos already enters the field against Mirassol knowing the result of Vitória, who face Palmeiras at 7:30 pm, at Allianz Parque.
If Santos beats Mirassol, they take an important step towards escaping relegation to Series B. Currently, Peixe is in a risky situation, but not a desperate one: according to UFMG projections, their chance of falling has dropped to 36,3% after the victory over Palmeiras.
A victory against Mirassol would increase Santos’ total points, guaranteeing more momentum in the fight against Z-4. With the margin reinforced, the club would reduce its dependence on stumbles from direct rivals, especially Vitória, which had been threatening the relegation zone, and Internacional, another competitor. A victory, however, does not save Santos from chances of relegation.
Furthermore, adding more points in this final stretch is essential because, according to UFMG calculations, Peixe would need to reach something around 48 points to consider itself practically free from the risk of falling, although more optimistic projections already indicate that 41 points can provide greater security, depending on the performance of the opponents.
What makes this moment especially decisive is that the next games will not be easy, but Santos still has a real chance of making the “account” to remain in Serie A. If they take advantage of their opportunities — beating Mirassol and, ideally, scoring more in direct confrontations or “more favorable” games —, Alvinegro can turn the game around and play more calmly in the final rounds.
