Fire hits Blue Zone structure on the eve of the end of COP30 and a short circuit is suspected

A fire hit the Blue Zone of COP30, in Belém, around 2pm this Thursday, causing a rush and the immediate evacuation of journalists, negotiators and ministers who were there. Security teams quickly isolated the space where the international pavilions are located, ensuring people were safely removed.

The Minister of Tourism, Celso Sabino, reported that the fire was controlled about half an hour later. He stated that the first suspicions indicate that the incident may have been caused by a cell phone that caught fire or a short circuit. Sabino highlighted that the teams’ response was quick and that the episode should not impact the progress of the conference.

According to the minister, there are no plans to change, reduce or cancel the activities planned for the last days of the event, which is scheduled to end on Friday. Records made by participants show the moment when the public left the pavilions in a hurry, while the smoke spread and generated tension among those present.
