Chilean authorities recovered the bodies of five tourists killed in a snowstorm in Torres del Paine National Park on Wednesday (19).
The victims — two Germans, two Mexicans and a Brit — were lost near the park’s Los Perros campsite during heavy snowfall, which caused zero visibility conditions and wind speeds exceeding 120 miles per hour, equivalent to a Category 3 hurricane.
Chilean Air Force helicopters transported the bodies from the remote location. The remains were taken to the headquarters of the legal medical service in Puerto Natales for identification.
Rescue teams also evacuated tourists who were stranded at the Dickson camp as conditions remained dangerous.
Torres del Paine National Park, known for its mountain peaks and subpolar forests, covers approximately 1,810 square kilometers and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors annually.
