Government makes mistakes and creates false narratives, says Motta about reaction to PL Antifaction

The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), criticized the stance adopted by the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in relation to the PL Antifação, approved in the House this Tuesday (18).

On social media, Motta highlighted that the government chose the wrong path by taking a stance against the project and classified as “very serious” the attempt to “distort” the effects of the text that creates the Legal Framework to Combat Organized Crime.

The text, approved in the sixth version by rapporteur Guilherme Derrite (PP-SP) by 370 votes in favor and 110 against, was seen as a defeat for the federal government, which tried to postpone the vote and even remove Derrite from the rapporteur.

With approval, the text goes to the Senate for analysis.

Derrite’s version changes the basic proposal of the project, sent by the federal government itself, and toughens penalties by creating specific criminal types for crimes committed by members of factions.

In practice, at the same time as it toughens penalties, the project empties the Federal Police’s power to act by removing financial resources from three funds that currently finance the fight against crime.

Although the approval of the text in the Chamber is considered a defeat for Lula, the choice of Vieira as rapporteur in the Senate is seen as a relief on the government’s agenda. The senator currently reports to the CPI for Combating Organized Crime and is seen as a figure who adopts an independent stance from both government and opposition parties in his work.

Earlier, this Wednesday, Lula also used social media to highlight that the initiative “weakens the fight against crime and creates legal uncertainty” by withdrawing funds from the Federal Police.

With the new report, Palácio do Planalto stated that it will maintain its speech against the project, claiming that Derrite’s text is flawed and will not help in the fight against crime. The government hopes that changes will be made in the Senate that bring the project closer to the original text, prepared by the Ministry of Justice.
