El Periódico

The US is working closely with Russia on a secret plan to end the war in Ukraine. The North American media Aixos has reported on the conversations that include several points although many of them have not been officially confirmed. Next, several keys to explain the details of this work plan.

Steve Witkoffone of the most visible figures in American foreign policy, leads the talks on the US side. It’s a billionaire real estate businessmanfriend and golf partner of President Donald Trump, White House special presidential envoy to the Middle East. He represents Washington in major conflicts in the region, from tensions with Iran to negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza, as well as the war in Ukraine.

On the Russian side, Kirill Dmitrievwho heads the Russian Direct Investment Fund, is leading the talks which, he has assured, are based on principles that Trump and Putin previously agreed upon in a summit in Alaska.

He secret plan where they work USA y Russia contains one roadmap which consists of 28 points divided into four big blocksas detailed by the American media ‘Axios’, which claims that it is inspired by the plan that Trump promoted for a ceasefire in Gaza. The peace in Ukrainelas security guarantees For both contenders, the security in Europe -European security architecture- and future relations between the US, Russia and the US These are the four major areas on which the plan is based.

Territorial control of eastern Ukraine

One of the most controversial issues is what territorial control of eastern Ukraine would look like. Several media outlets point out, in the absence of official confirmation, that the roadmap involves Ukraine give up parts of Donbas (Luhansk and Donetsk) or recognize them “de facto control” for Russia. It also addresses the approach of drastically reducing the ukrainian armypractically in half. There are mentions of restrictions al Ukrainian armament: for example, that Ukraine gives up long-range missiles that they can reach Moscow. The roadmap suggests that Russian could gain more formal status as a recognized language in Ukraine – even an official language – as well as give more presence to the Russian Orthodox Church.

‘Think tanks’ and analysts, such as Chatman House, warn that an agreement imposed or without the full participation of Ukraine runs the risk of being a “fragile peace” or a “false peace” that could consolidate military conquests instead of resolving the causes of the conflict. Likewise, they point out that leaked elements—cession of territories, heavy cuts to the Ukrainian army, limitation of long-range capabilities—are politically difficult of accept afterr Kiev and for much of Europe.
