Internet users disapprove of the Bolsonarist deputy’s amendment; law was sanctioned on November 17
The president (PT) is being criticized on social media after which prohibits the use of neutral language in Brazilian public administration at all government levels. The legislation was published in Official Gazette of the Union on Monday (November 17, 2025) and prohibits expressions such as “todes” and other forms of gender inflection that do not follow traditional Portuguese grammatical rules.
On X, users question the relationship between the law and the Bolsonaro deputy (PL-MG), since he was the one who proposed the in public administration communication. The original project is from the deputy (PT-DF).
The prohibition is contained in article 5 of the new law, which determines “not to use new forms of gender inflection and number of words in the Portuguese language, contrary to the consolidated grammatical rules, the Volp (Spelling Vocabulary of the Portuguese Language) and the Portuguese Language Spelling Agreement, promulgated by Decree No. 6,583, of September 29, 2008”.
The measure is part of a broader project that establishes the use of “simple language” in public bodies. The text aims to ensure that citizens easily understand information published by government entities.
The Chamber of Deputies approved the project on October 27 and forwarded it to the Executive Branch for analysis the following day.
In the Senate, the text received a favorable opinion from the senator (MDB-SE) and was approved in March 2025. Upon returning to the Chamber, the project incorporated changes that extended the obligation of simple language to all Powers of the Union, States, DF and municipalities.
