The minister of the (Supreme Federal Court) praised the candidate for a vacancy in the Supreme Court, congratulated the president (PT) for his choice and said he would help the head of the (Advocacy General of the Union).
“I congratulate Minister Messias for his nomination to the Supreme Court. This is a qualified name for the AGU and which meets the constitutional requirements. Therefore, I also congratulate the President of the Republic for his nomination. Messias will have my full support in the republican dialogue with the Senators”, Mendonça wrote on his profile on X (formerly Twitter).
Mendonça was nominated to the STF by the former president (PL), in 2021, but maintains a good relationship with Messias. Both are evangelicals and AGU employees. The minister is the first member of the Supreme Court to celebrate Lula’s appointment.
The vacancy in the court opened with the departure of Luís Roberto Barroso, after meeting with him at the Palácio da Alvorada, in Brasília, in the morning.

Nominating names for vacancies in the Supreme Court is the prerogative of the Presidency of the Republic, but the names must be endorsed by senators. It is up to the Senate to approve the president’s nomination for the STF, and this requires the minimum support of 41 of the 81 senators, in a secret vote.
Government members recognize that Messias’ name faces resistance in the Senate, but they say they believe that now, with the nomination made official, individual conversations with parliamentarians will begin.
