This Thursday, the Constitutional Affairs Committee considered a Chega proposal to amend the for 2026 which intends to prohibit the allocation of public funds for the construction of mosques, with only the proponent voting against.
The 1st Commission met this morning, before the start of the for 2026, and approved an opinion, prepared by social-democratic deputy Francisco José Martins, which concludes that Chega’s proposal does not comply with the Constitution of the Republic.
The opinion was approved by PS, PSD, PCP, Livre and JPP, with Chega voting against and CDS-PP abstaining.
The document states that the Chega’s proposal makes “explicit discrimination based on religious confession” and “enshrines an arbitrary and unreasonable inequality of treatment”, violating the “constitutional principles of equality and religious freedom, in an irremediable way”.
Therefore, the commission concluded that the proposal “does not meet the requirements” to be admitted to discussion and voting within the scope of the State Budget for 2026.
