The national PL decided to support the candidacy for the current government of Mato Grosso, ignoring the intentions of senator Wellington Fagundes (PL), who put his name forward for state succession in 2026.
The decision was endorsed by former president Jair Bolsonaro.
Pivetta is expected to take over the government in April, when he resigns to run for the Senate.
The PL leadership’s assessment is that Mendes, as he is highly rated, should transfer his political capital to Pivetta, making him a favorite for the election.
To the Panel, Fagundes, who has a senator’s mandate until 2030, says that his candidacy is maintained and cites the fact that he appears in first place in several surveys.
