Slovakia is waiting for the first snow disaster of the season: it will hit these areas in just a few hours!

On Friday (November 21), a snow disaster is likely to hit parts of Slovakia. Heavier snowfall is expected to occur in central and eastern Slovakia, on Spiš and Šariš and in the surrounding area. On the territory of the Slovak Republic, the wind must also be taken into account. The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) informed about it on the social network.

  • The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute warns of a snow disaster on Friday.
  • Heavier snowfall will affect central and eastern Slovakia.
  • Up to 20 centimeters of snow can fall on Spiš and Šariša.
  • Strong winds are expected in the west and east of Slovakia.
  • Snow tongues, drifts and ice may form in places.

“In the next few hours and days, a very interesting synoptic situation is emerging, which will bring a fundamental change in the weather to our area. Most of the territory will gradually see the first snowflakes, but in some areas, the first snow calamity of this season may occur,” meteorologists said. They pointed out that the precipitation, which will initially be rainy in places at lower altitudes, will change to snow.

According to SHMÚ, about five centimeters of snow should fall in central and eastern Slovakia on Friday. The least precipitation should be in the west of the country. The probability of snowfall is also lower in the extreme south, where, according to the institute, a significant part of the precipitation will be rain. Around 20 centimeters of snow is expected to fall on Spiš and Šariš and in the nearby area. The wind is expected to intensify especially in western and eastern Slovakia. However, the situation can still change.

In this context, SHMÚ warns of several dangerous phenomena. “Since it will also be windy, in some places we expect the formation of tongues of snow, occasionally drifts, again especially in the upper Spiš, Šariš and Orava and in the Tatra region. The strongest wind will blow in the southeast of the country. Since we expect ongoing cooling and a change in the state of precipitation, ice may also occasionally form,” the meteorologists warned.
