The head of Hungarian diplomacy reacts to the EU proposal: Sanctions against cooperation with Russia are unacceptable

The EU Council is considering sanctions against Russian energy resources. Hungary does not agree with such steps, because they would threaten their economy and increase energy costs for families.

The latest 20th package of European Union sanctions against Russia should also include sanctions against oil supplies and cooperation in the field of atomic energy. According to the MTI agency, the head of Hungarian diplomacy Péter Szijjártó drew attention to this after the meeting of the Council of the European Union for Foreign Affairs in Brussels. According to him, it is already beyond the “red line”, which the Hungarian government will never allow to be crossed, informs the correspondent of TASR in Budapest.

Szijjártó emphasized that preventing Russian oil supplies and nuclear cooperation would be in direct conflict with Hungarian national interests. “Without cooperation with Russia in the field of oil and nuclear energy, there is no Hungarian energy security or reduction of household energy bills. If cooperation with the Russians in the field of oil and nuclear energy has to be abandoned, the energy bills for Hungarian families will triple in the short term,” he added.

Energy security of Hungary

According to the Hungarian minister, Budapest will not allow European politicians, whom he called “sanctions fanatics”, to increase the energy costs of Hungarian families. And this is mainly because the United States granted Hungary an exemption from restrictions aimed at the Russian energy sector.

“While on the other side of the ocean they see and understand that due to the geographical location of Hungary it is not possible to physically supply the country without energy resources from Russia, here in Brussels they do not understand this. This is also a sign of madness,” underlined Szijjártó.
