Criticism from the vice-mayor of , Colonel Mello Araújo (PL), to (Republicans) made ()’s eventual candidacy for state government next year unfeasible, should Tarcísio run for President, in the view of allies of the mayor and governor.
(19), Mello Araújo made complaints about irregularities in the provision of services to drug addicts in Cracolândia and called a statement by Tarcísio about actions that contributed to the end of the agglomeration in the center a “great deception”. The background was an interview given by Tarcísio and Nunes to TV Record on the topic, with no mention of the vice-mayor.
The perception, according to two members of the first echelon, is that the Nunes and Tarcísio administrations work in an integrated manner, while Mello Araújo acts focused on himself, which would compromise the group’s confidence in leaving him at the head of the city.
Nunes is often cited as one of the governor’s options, alongside the vice-governor, Felício Ramuth (PSD), and the president of Alesp (Legislative Assembly), André do Prado (PL). If the mayor leaves office, however, he will leave the management and political articulation of the city in the hands of the deputy. Tarcísio is considered the most likely name on the center-right to run for President against Lula (PT), although he claims he will run for re-election. According to allies, discussions about succession only occur with the exception that they are hypothetical projections.
The governor, however, is a constant target of Jair Bolsonaro’s (PL) allies, who demand a more aggressive stance in defending the former president and efforts to prevent Bolsonaro from going to prison. Some publications by Mello Araújo on the networks have already been interpreted as part of these attacks. In July, he criticized politicians’ “disregard” for the former president.
“I am struck by the negligence of all the politicians, from all over Brazil, who were elected behind his back. [Bolsonaro]. There are already articulations happening”, he said. “There’s just one detail, people: our president is alive”, he said, without express quotes to Tarcísio.
Mello Araújo, retired colonel of the Military Police and former commander of Rota, is considered one of Bolsonaro’s most faithful allies in São Paulo. There is an expectation among the group that he will resign next year to run for the Senate. The colonel says he will do whatever Bolsonaro says.
Nunes had been trying to strengthen herself politically to gain an advantage over other possible candidates for government. At the beginning of the year, when he took office for his second term, he appointed former mayors of the interior as secretaries, seeking to expand any regional platforms.
The vice’s way of acting, however, was assessed as a possible obstacle to the project by his government team, especially after the beginning of friction with Tarcísio. Members of the secretariat devised a plan to try to bring him closer to the team, without success.
This Tuesday, Nunes gave up. He told interlocutors that he preferred a deputy who creates conflicts while working over an ally who tried to overthrow him.
