Despite Wednesday’s one-off rise, the world’s major stock markets have been falling for more than three weeks. Are we facing a scenario of stock market crisis that will trigger a destabilization of the financial system? Listen here to ‘Business of the Week’ on a podcast by José Gomes Ferreira
Despite Wednesday’s one-off rise, the major world stock markets have been falling for more than three weeks. The executive presidents of large banks such as Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs say that listed securities are overvalued and that shares could fall by 15 to 20 percent.
Virtual currencies are also falling, particularly bitcoin. Many experts openly talk about the existence of a bubble caused by the promises of Artificial Intelligence, which is starting to deflate. Is it too early to understand whether we are facing a technical economic correction? Or if we are facing a structural change in the financial and capital markets that could affect the banking sector and the solidity of large investment funds?
In this scenario, a stock market crisis could trigger a destabilization of the financial system and generate a crisis of confidence capable of affecting the banking sector itself, as has happened in other major crises, namely the two of this century. The world’s largest economies could thus be drawn into a financial turmoil and even enter into recession, which some economists already openly admit.
And, in this case, what will happen to the Portuguese economy and the State’s own accounts? Listen here on podcast to José Gomes Ferreira’s ‘Business of the Week’ with experts João Moreira Ratos, president of IGCP, the Treasury and Public Debt Management Agency, Catarina Castro, economist and financial markets analyst, and also António Nogueira Leite, former Secretary of State for Treasury and Finance and vice-president of Caixa Geral de Depósitos.
Business of the Week is a program by José Gomes Ferreira. The terms and realities of the national and international economy explained every week on SIC Notícias. It airs on television on Wednesdays at 11pm and is published as a podcast on Thursday. Listen to more episodes:
