When you open the curtain in the morning and the first faint hint of frost appears on the glass, it is suddenly clear that winter is really here. And just at that moment, paper laces are the best for the windows. Simple, clean and with a beautiful nostalgia reminiscent of childhood.
When it starts to get cold outside and the first lights come on at home, it’s the right time to let a little winter poetry into the apartment. You may remember how you were as children and they stuck them on the windows. This simple habit has an incredible ability to turn even an ordinary apartment into a cozy winter retreat. And this year, paper lace is making a comeback. All you need is a few sheets of white paper, scissors and a moment of peace at the kitchen table.

When simple materials make a big show
Making paper lace is surprisingly easy, but the result looks like the frost itself is drawing on your windows. Just prepare a plain one or a thinner quarter, which you can fold into a triangle as needed and start cutting out small shapes. It is in them that the magic is hidden, the more irregular the cuts and curves, the more impressive the lace. The internet is full of inspiration for folding or instructions on how to fold step by step, how to achieve perfectly symmetrical flakes or delicate frosted edges.
“It’s important not to be afraid of irregular cuts, they are what make every piece original. And when I lightly iron the finished flake over baking paper, it straightens beautifully and looks like a real frosty ornament on the window,” advises decorator Eliška Procházková from Libochovice.
Magic stuck on glass
You can attach the finished flakes and lace to the window with ordinary adhesive tape or a mixture of water with a pinch of starch, which holds firmly after drying, but can be easily removed. If you spread them along the upper edge of the window, the effect of frosty regions like from old cottages will be created. Try to spread the smaller flakes irregularly, it looks natural and soft, as if snow is falling directly behind the glass.
Small details that make you happy
Paper decorations stand out beautifully on windows facing the street, where the evening light from the apartment lights them up like a lantern. If you want to be even more creative, you can lightly spray the laces with glitter spray or add small stars. But it is tasteful to leave them pure white and rely on the simplicity of the shapes, which gives the interior the calmness that belongs to winter.
When the whole family gets involved in production
Paper laces are among the most grateful family decorations. Children will appreciate that they can create according to their imagination, and adults will get a moment of peace and a return to childhood. When you then stick them together on your windows, the household suddenly acquires the atmosphere of a winter fairy tale.
Paper laces are simple, affordable and yet incredibly effective. Although they won’t replace lights or wreaths, they will give the interior a softness and cleanliness that other decorations can’t. And best of all, it only takes a few minutes of time and a little imagination. Just sit down, fold the paper and cut out your own piece of winter.
