The director general of Cecafé (Brazilian Coffee Exporters Council), Marcos Matos called the suspension of tariffs applied by the United States an “early Christmas present” and said that the sector has the immediate challenge of regaining lost space in the American market.
“Now it’s run to regain space nos blends and reduce economic impacts”, said Matos, who had just disembarked from a flight from Belém, returning from COP30, when he received the news.
Os Brazilian coffee producers export US$2.5 billion to the United States and, according to him, by other suppliers — Colombia, Vietnam and several African countries.
“As time went by, we ran the risk of an irreversible impact,” said Matos.
According to the executive, the big problem was that American buyers used their stocks to the limit and, under equal conditions, were already negotiating long-term contracts with other countries.
“We still have time to prevent this from happening. What we needed was isonomic conditions,” he added.
Since August, according to Matos, the Sales to the United States fell 50%.
The director of Cecafé praised the conduct of the negotiations by vice-president Geraldo Alckmin and highlighted the importance of the NCA (National Coffee Association), which pointed out to Donald Trump’s government how domestic prices were rising because of the 40% surcharge on Brazilian coffee.
