Corinthians won 3-1 in the classic played against São Paulo at the Neo Química Arena, in Itaquera, this Thursday (20), in the 34th round of the Brazilian Championship.
Yuri Alberto, twice, and Memphis Depay, who came on in the second half, scored for the home team, who were coming off defeats to Ceará and Red Bull Bragantino. Chilean striker Gonzalo Tapia scored for coach Hernán Crespo’s team.
Both teams have 45 points, with São Paulo in 9th, and Corinthians in 10th, with the number of red cards as a tiebreaker.
The match started with dominance from Corinthians, who put pressure on the São Paulo team and created scoring chances – in the 5th minute, Matheus Bidu almost opened the scoring with a low shot outside the area.
The first goal came in the 30th minute. Breno Bidon was brought down inside the area and, with the help of VAR, the referee confirmed the penalty, converted by Yuri Alberto.
São Paulo reacted in the second half and tied the match in the 8th minute, with a header from Tapia after a corner kick, but Corinthians secured the victory at the end of the game.
Memphis, who came on during the complementary stage in place of Gui Negão, made a good move in the Tricolor penalty area, gave defender Sabino a pen and scored Corinthians’ second goal in the 38th minute, with Yuri Alberto sealing the game’s score, in the 43rd.
São Paulo returns to the field next Sunday (23) at 4pm (Brasília time), in a match against Juventude. Later, at 8:30 pm, Corinthians faces Cruzeiro, at Mineirão.
